Large Basin

Large Basin

Basins have been in use in homes since time immemorial. A basin is essentially a type of bowl that is used for washing up. It is usually placed on a table or attached to a wall, with water supply coming from attached faucets. Basins may also refer to vessels that are used to store water or any other liquid.

In modern homes, basins are usually found and used in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where washing up is required. Predominantly, large basins are used in bathrooms and also kitchens to avoid the spillage of water and convenience of use. Some of the important factors to keep in mind while choosing large basins for the kitchen or the bathroom are:

  • Size of the room
  • Roughness of use
  • Purpose of use
  • Material and style of the basin

Let's take a look at each of these in detail.

Selecting a Basin Based on Material and Nature of Use

The most appropriate large basin for a kitchen needs to be chosen based on your requirement. Since kitchen basins are usually meant for rough use such as the washing and scrubbing of dishes, durable materials such as stainless steel are recommended. Stainless steel large basins usually come with the drain at the center, as opposed to smaller ones with the drain at the corner. If you happen to use several pots and pans in the kitchen, then a deeper basin is what you need to look for.

In bathrooms, however, a lot of heavy washing does not tend to happen. Basins in bathrooms are meant for mild use such as brushing teeth, washing your face or your hair. So, ceramics in cool and soothing colors are preferred for large basins in bathrooms. You would want to go for good quality ceramics from a reputed source or manufacturer to avoid accidents or mishaps from occurring.

Selecting a Basin Based on Room Size

If you have a large kitchen, going in for a large basin is definitely a given, since it is more convenient. Even if you have your kids doing the dishes, you wouldn't have to worry about them playing or splashing around all the soapy water in your kitchen. You could avoid accidental spillage and thereby avoid accidents. On the other hand, if you have little space in your kitchen and don't do a lot of heavy cooking, a large basin could simply occupy unnecessary space. However, if kept clean, a large basin can also serve as a storage area when not in use.

In bathrooms, larger basins can again be useful when you have more room. Especially for a kid's bathroom, a large basin could mean more fun. Also, if you tend to wash your hair in the sink rather than in the shower,  this could be the right option for you. For smaller bathrooms, you can go in for smaller sinks, or even corner basins.

There are several websites on the internet where you could take a look at many designs of large basins before you decide to go for one. Going through local stores in your area that stock bathroom and kitchen fittings can also be of great help.
